Kawuneeche Valley: This valley, between the Never Summer Range and the Front Range, was once called the North Fork Valley (certainly easier to pronounce). Kawuneeche is an Indian name meaning "Coyote." The Colorado River (once known as the Grand and North Fork of the Colorado) flows through the Kawuneeche Valley's wide and flat confines.
Many Park trails depart from the Valley, including the trip to Lulu City and Little Yellowstone. We get a great view of this valley from the Many Parks Curve on our Road Tour of the Virtual Landscape.
This valley is also part of a massive water diversion effort to keep the eastern plains happy with water. The Grand Ditch flanks the West ridge of the Valley beneath the Never Summer Mountain Range. This ditch catches water headed for the Colorado River and diverts it over the La Poudre Pass to defeat the Continental Divide.#
